Songs about complicated people, inherited stories, and the places that never really leave us.
01 / INTRODUCTION
MEET BRIANNA JEAN
The stories
we inherit.
Some stories stay with you. I’m Brianna Jean, a West Virginia songwriter with a background in theatre and a fascination with complicated people. I’m drawn to the stories history leaves unfinished, the reputations people inherit, and the distance between who someone really was and how they’re remembered. My music lives somewhere between indie folk-pop and theatrical storytelling, where old stories find a new perspective.
02 / THE STORY
A NAME WITH A HISTORY
Jean was
her name.
Before it was mine, it was hers.
My name is Brianna Jean. Jean was my grandmother's name, too - Barbara Jean. She grew up in the coal camps of McDowell County, where the mountains held close the lives of the people who worked, loved, and raised their families there. I was named for her, and as I was growing up, she called me “Brianna Jean” in that sweet "Mack-Dowell" County lull, an accent that is slowly losing it's hold in this part of the country. Now, as I make music under that name, I find myself following it back to her, to McDowell County, to the stories that shaped my family
She gave me more than a name. She gave me a connection to a place, a history, and a collection of stories that began long before I was born.
Some of those stories were told. Others were left between the lines. And somewhere along the way, I began finding my own voice in them.
This music is my way of following those stories home.
It begins in the county. But it doesn't end there.
